Why use a weighted blanket? Anxiety, sensory input and deep touch pressure to help anxiety, stress and sleep disorder sufferers.

If you've ever searched for weighted blankets online, you'll have quickly found yourself drowning in a vast ocean of information discussing sensory processing disorders and deep touch pressure created when using a weighted blanket. But what exactly is that?

Who discovered weighted blankets?

For several years, weighted blankets existed in a world limited to little to no research.

Surprisingly, the use of weight is not a new phenomenon, having been explored by Occupational Therapists and rehabilitation professionals. Originally discovered by Occupational Therapists who used weighted vests and weighted blankets on children and teenagers with learning disabilities and mental developmental disorders, they decreased the need for the use of seclusion and restraint during crisis states.

The benefits of weighted blanket amongst other individuals suffering with anxiety, stress and sleep disorders, has recently gained traction and curiosity, largely due to the unknown positive effects of deep touch pressure.

Deep touch pressure & weighted blankets.

Deep touch pressure is the type of surface pressure that is exerted in most types of firm touching including holding, stroking, petting of animals, or swaddling. A deep pressure is both relaxing and calming unlike a very light touch which will often alert the nervous system, such as when someone touches your shoulder from behind and causes you to instinctively turn around.

Just as a newborn baby relaxes when swaddled in the days following their birth, it's been revealed that the same calming sensation generated through deep touch pressure is equally craved and desired by many children and adults as well. The physical connection established by weighted blankets provides warmth and security, helping the body relax and promote emotional regulation.

Many Drift Blanket Co. users describe our weighted blankets as a self-soothing way to comfort and care for one's self during anxious, tense or stressful periods.
